ROLL  BALL  OR  PENALTY?

One of the first things a new Touch referee has to get to grips with is when to give a roll ball and when to give a penalty.

There are seven situations which result in a roll ball and ten situations which result in a penalty.

ROLLBALL

Change of possession - play starts with a rollball:
  1. Ball is dropped
  2. Ball carrier steps on or over the sideline
  3. Tap is performed incorrectly
  4. Rollball is performed incorrectly
  5. Half puts ball on or over the scoreline
  6. 6th Touch occurs
  7. Half is touched

PENALTY

These are the situations which result in a penalty:
  1. Forward Pass
  2. Incorrect Substitution
  3. Misconduct
  4. Offside
  5. Phantom Touch
  6. Touch & Pass
  7. Obstruction
  8. Over-physical Touch
  9. Overstepping the mark
  10. Voluntary Rollball

  • With penalties the non-offending team restarts with a tap at the mark indicated by the referee
  • The defending team retires 10 metres from the mark

ATOMIC  TOUCH

Atomic Touch, codified in 2012, is a multi-directional game that takes elements of Touch, Rugby, Basketball and Netball and mixes them together to produce a dynamic, exciting game that can be played indoors.  Here are two slideshows that show the basic rules and how to effectively referee a game.
