More Carmarthenshire secondary school pupils than ever before are trying out minimal contact versions of rugby thanks to the introduction of Atomic Touch, the indoor version of traditional Touch and the establishment of Touch tournaments throughout the school year in a variety of locations, including beaches at Pembrey and Pendine.

A number of Carmarthenshire pupils have already played regional Touch for west Wales' Barcutiaid Coch | Red Kites, in the Wales Touch Nationals and the new 2013-14 plan aims to introduce over 1000 boys and girls to the game via a series of regional and county tournaments.  It is hoped that a proportion of these players will go on to play representative Touch for the Barcutiaid and perhaps even Wales.

The plan was produced by 5x60 Touch coodinator, Matt Adams after consultation with the Carmarthenshire 5x60 team, as well as WTA and WRU officers.  It represents a big step forward for the game in west Wales.

On announcing the plan, Matt said;

'These are very exciting times for Touch in Carmarthenshire.  We've offered Touch sporadically in a few schools since 2010 and have done a fair few tournaments.  But by 2012-13 we had introduced even more pupils (especially girls) to Touch via the new Touch / Netball hybrid game, Atomic and we also had four Carmarthenshire school girls represent west Wales in the Wales Touch Nationals in April.

We know that there is a great hunger for the game and we wanted to make sure that the right systems are in place for everyone to give it a go and maybe go on to play representative Touch or even just play socially in a local league.

Touch fits in so well with what we are trying to achieve with 5x60 because it appeals to males and females of all ages and has really simple rules.  Because of the low chance of injury and the various age grades, it's one of the few games where you can literally play competitively throughout your lifetime which ties in nicely with the Sport Wales mission 'Every Child Hooked on Sport for Life'.
